Banner Health’s Journey to Confidence and Compliance with WebTMA
How Banner Health uses WebTMA to ensure compliance, improve efficiency, and confidently manage facilities in one of the most regulated industries.
In healthcare, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) often have a short shelf life. On average, organizations switch providers every five to seven years, seeking better functionality and support. But for Banner Health, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the United States, the problem wasn’t the software, it was how the system was being used.
“In healthcare, we go to a brand-new CMMS provider every five to seven years. And the belief is that it’s the product; it’s them, not us.”
About Banner Health
Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, Banner Health operates 30 hospitals and numerous specialized facilities across six states. With more than 50,000 employees, it is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems. Its scale and complexity mean that efficient facility and asset management isn’t optional, it’s essential for ensuring compliance, safety, and patient care.
When Ryan Schramm joined the organization as Senior Systems Manager and System Administrator for WebTMA, his directive was clear: evaluate and replace the existing CMMS.
A challenge turned into an opportunity
Before proceeding with a new RFP process, he was introduced to Darren Brown, the Director of Professional Services and a 20+ year implementer of WebTMA. Rather than posing general capability questions, Ryan focused on specifics to challenge Darren’s deep expertise with WebTMA. His intent was not to ask if TMA could perform a function, but to see how the system delivered results directly out of the box, without customization or complex workarounds.
Proving the value of WebTMA
The WebTMA demonstration revealed what Banner Health already had at its fingertips: a powerful, flexible platform capable of supporting one of the most complex healthcare systems in the country. What became clear was that the challenge wasn’t with WebTMA itself, but with how it was being used internally.
“I literally just flat out said, the problem isn’t [WebTMA]. [WebTMA] has the modules, [and] has the functionality required for the second most regulated industry in the country, and that’s healthcare.”
Confidence in a defendable position
For a healthcare organization as large and highly regulated as Banner Health, compliance is critical. Healthcare is the second most regulated industry in the U.S., behind only nuclear energy. Having a system that can withstand scrutiny and keep the organization in a defendable position is non-negotiable. Ryan emphasized that WebTMA already had the technology needed for success, no new product required.
“That functionality already exists. It isn’t tomorrow. We already have the technology today that we need to be successful and to be placed in that defendable position.”
Trusting in WebTMA
For Banner Health, WebTMA has proven to be more than just a CMMS, it is a long-term partner capable of meeting the demands of one of the nation’s largest healthcare systems. In an industry where most organizations change providers every few years, Banner Health’s experience demonstrates the staying power of WebTMA’s flexibility, functionality, and commitment to compliance.

"If a software is able to essentially demonstrate the ability to put a healthcare organization in a defendable position, those that are less regulated can absolutely confidently step in to utilize it."
